Trigence Solutions:
Updating Applications
The Problem — Application update and patch management comprise an important and growing drain on IT resources. The two most problematic areas are:
- System updates to the OS that an application is currently running in
- Application updates that address existing problems or add functionality
The urgent nature of system updates, which are often performed for security reasons, can narrow the testing window and compromise the very applications they are designed to protect. Likewise, a vendor's application update may offer important service improvements or bug fixes, but as long as the application and the OS are intertwined, the time it takes to diagnose the cause of a "broken" application can jeopardize critical business functions.
The Trigence Solution
Trigence solves both the application update and system update problems by encapsulating applications within an isolated environment. Application Capsules are protected from changes that are made to the system in which they reside, and from changes to other applications on the system.
By protecting applications from their environment, Trigence lowers the barrier to implementing system updates and patches. System updates or patches are separated from applications running in Capsules, so IT managers can deploy critical updates faster and easier. Using Trigence, IT Managers can keep systems running and protected from the problems the patches were designed to solve.
Trigence also improves the update and patch processes at the application level. Application Capsules may be easily cloned, fully configured, and will run immediately on a test system. Updates may be performed and tested very quickly directly to the Application Capsule, and once the update has been validated, the new version can be deployed immediately, without further reconfiguration, in the production environment.
