Monitoring Applications

The Problem — Monitoring the health of applications is a difficult task that is made even more difficult by the heavily co-dependent and intertwined nature of typical IT environments. Application health is generally understood only through inference using proxy variables. Teasing out the correct diagnosis of a particular application with multiple dependencies can be arduous and time-consuming.

The Trigence Solution

Part of what makes the Trigence solution so powerful is that the same software elements that provide the ability to run applications inside protected Capsules also gives you the ability to directly monitor the health of an application. All of this information is available directly via the command-line trictrl interface, or through the SOAP interface. Through either interface an IT manager can not only learn about an application's health, but more importantly can act on that information using most any tool that is currently being used to manage applications.

The Monitoring possibilities that Trigence establishes can be used in many different ways:

• A cloned Capsule of a critical application can be stored on an NAS and its deployment can be triggered automatically (via the SOAP interface) if the production hardware encounters problems.
• Accurate and complete logs of the performance of applications can be maintained allowing comparisons to be made between the application's performance in dev, test, QA, and production environments.
• The comprehensive information available to managers enables the creation of advanced monitoring dashboards for use by support and management staff.
